Research Journal for Game Development Released

Hingham, MA, March 23, 2004: Charles River Media, the leading publisher of game development books, has released the first issue of the Journal of Game Development. The game industry has become a multi-billion dollar industry in a relatively brief period. During this continuing period of accelerated growth, little time has been invested in serious academic research. Game developers and publishers, pressured by competition and commercial challenges, are forced to learn and develop “as they go.” Consequently, the lack of game-specific research has prevented many in the academic community from embracing game development as a serious field of study. To remedy this situation, it is necessary to provide a vehicle for disseminating the research and findings that are indigenous to the game development community. “The Journal of Game Development (JOGD) provides a much-needed, peer-reviewed, medium of communication and the raison d'être for serious academic research focused solely on game-related issues,” according to David Pallai, president of Charles River Media.

By publishing the Journal of Game Development, we have created an outlet for peer-reviewed research, helping to validate the work and garner acceptance for the study of game development by the academic community,” says Mr. Pallai. The JOGD will serve the game development industry and academic community. It will present leading-edge, original research, and theoretical underpinnings that detail the most recent findings in related academic disciplines, hardware, software, and technology that will directly affect the way games are conceived, developed, produced, and delivered.

The JOGD covers all game development related areas, including artificial intelligence, mathematics, physics, multiplayer games, programming, graphics, audio, simulation, polygonal techniques, real-time issues, etc. Other areas of importance and application for these findings include robotics, visualization, and grid computing.

The journal is published quarterly and accepts papers continuously.

The first issue features five articles:

  • Near Optimal Hierarchical Path-Finding by Adi Botea, Martin Müller, Jonathan Schaffer

  • Versatile Walk Engine by Ronan Boulic, Branislav Ulicny, Daniel Thalmann

  • An Architecture for Integrating Plan-Based Behavior Generation with Interactive Game Environments
by R. Michael Young, Mark O. Riedl, Mark Branly, Arnav Jhala, R.J. Martin, C.J. Saretto

  • Efficient Navigation Mesh Implementataion by John C. O’Neill

  • Game Development and Social Science by Edward Castronova

The editorial board for the JOGD is comprised of leaders in the field. Further information is available from www.jogd.com. Free copies of the first issue of the JOGD will be available at the Charles River Media booth at GDC ( #641).
